  1. Hi all.

    I have a reoccurring problem with AIDA64. I tried the new trial version of it to see if the problem still exists, as I had the same situation with previous releases, thus making me uninstall them, but no luck.

    Anyway, here is the scenario:

    When starting AIDA64, it shows its splash-screen with info about what is being started up. Everything goes super-fast until it reaches the "Loading Driver" message. AIDA64 then hangs at that message for almost 5 minutes, the HD LED is constantly ON and at first you can hear the HD doing something, then it stops but the LED remains on all the time during the hang. and the computer becomes super-sluggish and almost impossible to use. Once it completes with loading the driver, AIDA64 loads the rest of its components really fast and the computer is back to its normal speed. What is going on and how can I monitor and resolve this? It happens only on first run of AIDA64. Once it loads, I can close it and restart it many times and every time it will load in a matter of 2-3 seconds. I tried disabling all the services and start-up programs, it makes no difference.

    Why is the initial driver loading so slow and what is it causing the system to do to becomse almost non-responsive? It is obviously triggering something.

    My system is Windows 7 Ultimate x64, i7 4790K at stock speed, WD Blue 1Tb HD, GTX 980 SC, 16Gb RAM - more than enough to run AIDA64.

  2. Hi. I have an update about this issue. I downloaded cumulative updates for my Windows (the ones called "convenience rollup" or so) from Microsoft. After installing them, the hang still occurs for the first run, but it lasts much, much shorter now. Maybe 20 seconds or so, compared to the previous 2-3 minutes. The updates were installed in this suggested order:

    1) April 2015 servicing stack update (KB3020369)

    2) May 2016 Convenience rollup update (KB3125574)

    3) July 2016 update rollup (KB3172605)

     

    Obviously, some of them caused this change. It is now much better than it was. Thanks for the help and hints, the hang is now much more bearable. So, I just wanted to post this update so that other members could read and maybe benefit from it if they have a similar problem.

  3. Do you have any suggestion about what could I install and run prior to triggering this hanging, and then that tool to monitor and create a log of what was going on during those five minuted? If it "catches" AIDA and its loading, maybe it will catch those other stuff and enable us to pinpoint the culprit. I tried Windows' Process/Resource Monitor, but it chokes during the hang and doesn't catch anything useful.

  4. It is as if Windows "forgets" or delays the loading of that "something", and when it gets triggered, it must complete it obviously. After if has done that, the PC runs without a hitch and everything opens and loads fast, no more hangs. And AIDA unmistakingly triggers it every initial time.

    Also don't know why it hogs the HD LED, there is no disk activity to be heard, yet the LED is constantly on during the full time of the hanging process.

  5. Hi, thanks for the idea. I downloaded and installed that update without a problem, but the problem persists. AIDA still triggers the hang, or it gets triggered on its own during the loading of Desktop now, which makes the PC even more "choked" upon restart. I do not have any themes or gadgets on my Desktop, it is a simple one with wallpaper and icons, nothing special.

  6. Hello, and thanks for the quick and detailed response. Well, I do not have external hard disks nor any USB devices, it is a basic usage PC. In device manager, all components look normal, nothing with exclamation. The strange thing is that this happens only once when triggered. Once it completes, I can restart AIDA in virtually 3-4 seconds, all programs load quickly and Windows shuts down normally. Only that one hang must I endure in order to continue to use the PC. It is as if that it has to occur at initital time, then everything runs normal. I would like to find what causes that hang. So far AIDA is the only software that can trigger this, as I can not suspect when it will occur on its own or do multiple restarts, but when it does, the PC is quite unusable until it finishes.

    I tried your suggestions, and I also tried disabling all but Microsoft services at starup and other autorun programs - no difference.  :(  

  7. Hello, all. I am sorry if I am posting this in the wrong section of the forum, but I would like to try to solve something that has been bugging me for months now. I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit build. Upon starting the computer and everything loading up in Desktop, a few minutes later there is a constant LED lit for disk activity, although I don't hear the HDD doing anything. During that time, I can start some programs, but those that do with HD won't start. This last for 2-3 minutes. After whatever it has been doing is done, the programs run during the hang suddenly appear, all works normal - until next restart. There is no malware on the PC.

    Now, I have discovered that if in those few minutes after the boot-up I start AIDA, it will hang at "Loading Driver" screen and cause the exact behaviour! Obviously, AIDA's driver triggers whatever is being triggered to cause this hang and I have been using AIDA as a tester to see whether I may have fixed the issue by trying to disable some startup tasks, services or scheduled task, but no luck so far. After this hanging is done, AIDA continues to load and after that the PC is fully usable. AIDA is good as I can use it as a trigger because if I wait for Windows to start it, it doesn't always happen at the same moment. But AIDA obviously triggers it with something no matter the time.

    If anybody has an idea what could it be, please let me know. Another way to force the hang is to select Restart or Shutdown immediately after the computer has booted. Then Windows will also trigger this hang and won't let the PC turn off until it's done - HD LED is on, no HD sounds, hangs for the sime amount of time - I suspect it is some process that causes this I just haven't figured out which one it is, yet.

    I would really like to get to the bottom of this, please help diagnose this annoyance.

  8. Well, thanks for the help so far. It actually makes sense if Gigabyte did put this offset, because the CPU's heatsink physically gets barely warm and is not even close to temperatures over 40°C. Maybe they figured that the SMSC chip sends too high a reading and therefore flashed the BIOS with this patch to "correct" the problem.

    Prescott cores run very hot even at idle, I can't imagine what the sensor chip would send to AIDA64 (probably something over 60°C, which is not very nice to see).

    Now that you have mentioned a "BIOS Offset", I remembered something. When I downloaded the BIOS update for this board from Gigabyte's website, it was version F5. However, I remember that in one of the previous BIOS version descriptions there was something about like "Adjust CPU temperature measurement accuracy for Prescott CPU". Although my CPU is not a Prescott one, could it actually be that the BIOS itself has a "patch" for CPU temp reading in order to display the correct temp and is now doing it for both cores, since SMSC sensor chip might do it wrongly (causing AIDA64 do display these wrong readings)?

  10. EasyTune shows CPU temp to be 31°C, while AIDA64 says it is 48°C at the same time.

     

    This was taken when the computer was not under load (only these two applications and Google Chrome were opened at the time). The ET reading matches that of BIOS's, and is very logical since the heatsink is barely mildly warm to the touch (in other words, it is too "cold" for a 48°C temperature).

    OK, here it is:

     
    At this moment, the ambient temperature in the room is around 20°C.
    AIDA64 reports the CPU temp to be 42°C, and Motherboard temp to be 34°C.
     
    I have just restarted the PC and entered BIOS. It shows that the CPU temp is only 28°C (which sounds somehow very likely, because of the Northwood core and a very large all-copper Zalman heatsink with a 92mm fan on it at full speed).
     
    BIOS reports only CPU temp reading.
    AIDA64, however, shows temp readings for Motherboard, CPU, GPU and the hard drive.
  12. One more test done today. AIDA64 showed 47°C while the PC was at idle for some time. I then decided to restart the computer and to immediately enter BIOS to see its temperature readings. It showed that CPU temp was around 28-30°C only. This is a huge, like 15°C difference. I opened up the casing and the cooler was barely warm to the touch. So BIOS's reading somehow makes more sence than AIDA's. If the CPU temperature had risen really over 45°C, that would have made the heatsink more hot to the touch, wouldn't you agree?  B)

  15. Hi all. I just registered to post a question about the CPU temperature.

     

    I have this old Socket478 motherboard GA-8IPE1000-G v4.0 by Gigabyte and a 3.0GHz Northwood based Pentium 4 processor on it. I've made a test, so here is the thing:

    I had a stock cooler on this processor which kept it around 40 degrees, and this temperature (+/- a degreee or soo) was reported by both AIDA64 and the BIOS. However, I've recently mounted a new Zalman cooler and BIOS now reports temperatures which are lower, barely reaching 30 degrees, which is somewhat expected since the cooler is all copper, much better and larger than the stock one. However, AIDA64 still reports temperatures around 40-45 degrees - it is as if it were fixed on those temps for this CPU model and that's it. If I restart Windows at the moment while AIDA64 reported temps like 45 degrees and immediately enter BIOS, BIOS will show current temp around 26-30 degrees. Why is this happening?

     

    BIOS is Award Modular 2005, version F5.

    CPU is Intel Pentium 4 (200 x 15 = 3GHz), Northwood core, nothing overclocked.
