You're right, it's a bug that was "introduced" with the new "Custom (n states)" gauge type.  We've fixed it, as well as added a 3rd option to recognize the gauge index in the filenames, when the index is preceded with a space character.

Thank you for the explanation and yes you were able to describe it perfectly. I did use the same way: added a 0 in front of the numbering, except for 100. Only thing I did not use earlier was "_" and "-". 
The next update will fix the issue as stated by Fiery

Thank you for fixing it. I tested and now its working perfectly in both Custom (16 states) and Custom(n States).

Now images are accepted and arranged in ascending order PERFECTLY even without using "-" or "_".
